Pain In Neck and Shoulder, Get Easy Relief

!±8± Pain In Neck and Shoulder, Get Easy Relief

Sometimes it's hard to believe when all we're doing is sitting still, that the simple act of "sitting" can play havoc with our joints, muscles and tendons. Sitting for hours, without moving can deliver pain in neck and shoulder and even lower back, that is sometimes so severe, we are actually laid up, sometimes bed ridden with it. No fun!

Uncomfortable and sometimes debilitating pain that occurs from that 8-plus hour workday can be avoided!

I want to ask you a few pertinent questions. What are your conditions at work? There are traceable reasons for a pain in neck and shoulder. Is your computer at eye level, so you don't have to look up or down in order to see the screen? Is your keyboard at the same level as your elbows, so that you can type without putting strain on your wrists and arms? Do you rest your elbows on a comfortable armrest that keeps you in proper alignment with your keyboard and minimizes stress on your wrists? Are you all scrunched up at your desk and leaning forward to see your monitor screen, thus putting stress on your lower back? Do you have to twist your body in order to read a document? Do you have enough light? Is it coming from the right source? These are all conditions that all of us experience in our workplaces, whether at home or at an outside office. And we need to address these conditions because not remedying the conditions, will continue to cause you pain in neck and shoulder, lower back, wrists, and hips, etc.

Good posture at your work station is not just for good looks. Sure, you look more attractive sitting up straight, but, even more important than looking great, is the long term benefits of good posture and proper alignment. Good posture will preserve your health and well being. Good posture will prevent more serious physical stress related disorders later on. What's more, it's not hard to maintain. Good posture is "key" whether you are at a desk, in the kitchen cooking, sitting in a chair reading a good book, or even sleeping, for that matter.

There is a whole science devoted to the relationship of the body to objects that come into contact with that body. It is called ergonomics or human engineering. There are wonderful furnishings available that address keeping the body in proper alignment when engaged in ordinary, everyday activities. There are superb ergonomic chairs, desks, computer tables, lighting, mouse pads and wrist rests, document stands, chef's knives, binoculars...just about anything that comes into contact with the human body in any use. A good ergonomically designed chair can change your life for the better, and rid you of pain in neck and shoulder. I speak from personal experience. I'm accustomed to an 11 hour workday and have suffered from pain in neck and shoulder and lower back for years. I've experienced pinched nerves, sciatica, and more. I was so uncomfortable, I actually thought I was seriously ill. Then I did some homework and discovered "ergonomics". I researched the best chairs available to alleviate this discomfort. No one enjoys suffering.

There's a combination of things you can do to alleviate the pain in neck and shoulder and back. You must break from your work every 50 minutes or so, stand up, walk around, get something to drink, and do some gentle stretching exercises that can be easily done at your desk. My favorite exercise is the neck roll. Sit straight in your chair, bend your chin to your chest and slowly roll your head to the left shoulder, gently around (in a circular motion) to your right shoulder, then down to your chest again. Do it a couple times, then reverse the action. Then gently roll both shoulders back a few times, then forward, lifting them, then lowering them in the same gentle fluid motion. Then grab your hands behind your back and lift them up behind you as high as you can without straining. That's a trick I learned at Pilates. Now, stand up and bend forward from the waist and let your arms dangle. Let gravity pull your arms to the floor. Don't force it. This will relieve some of the stress in your lower back. Remember to keep your knees slightly bent.

Here are some of the best ergonomically designed office chairs I could find in the market.

1. Embody Chair by Herman Miller

This is the first chair that supports both your mind and body. It's loaded with health benefits! It was designed to increase blood circulation and improve the flow of oxygen, and even decrease your heart rate.

2. Swopper by Via

This is an innovative chair, actually a stool, that allows continuous motion while in a seated position. Would be great for dentists and crafts people.

3. Ab Stool

This is a uniquely supportive stool. It has a soft, pillow backrest that can smoothly swivel around and become an ab rest. It's perfect for doctors and dentists, or anyone who has to lean forward to perform tasks.

4. Aeron Chair by Herman Miller

The Aeron chair is the ultimate fine ergonomic solution for your tired sore neck and back. This chair is highly regarded as inherently very comfortable due to its wide range of fit. It is available in 3 sizes and is adjustable. The Aeron chair has gained a spot in the Museum of Modern Art's permanent collection. I believe it is considered the quintessential fine ergonomic chair.

You really don't have to live with pain in neck and shoulder, or lower back, or hands and wrists (as in carpal tunnel). It would be a very practical and wise maneuver to own a good ergonomic chair and save yourself much grief and discomfort, plus valuable work time. A good chair makes all the difference in how you feel and how you perform.

Ergonomics, Office Chairs and the Real Definition of Workplace Ergonomic Posture

!±8± Ergonomics, Office Chairs and the Real Definition of Workplace Ergonomic Posture

The dictionary definition of ergonomics or human factors is the application of scientific information concerning humans to the design of objects, systems and environment for human use. When a manufacturer uses this process they take into account many factors which can affect the consumer. They use theory, data and principles in order to design a chair that limits all unnatural motions which will cause fatigue and pain. What kind of things do ergonomically designed task chairs take into account?

Some of the factors that help in the design process are taking into consideration are the type of fatigue that will be undertaken, how fast a person must be able to move for quick movements, demands on memory. Physical factors include Strength, size, and speed. Ergonomics can study specific work environments and chair types such as a task chair or executive chair and even stools. Many things in a persons work environment can affect comfort and productivity. The time it takes to do a task, the risk demands and the physical requirements can all be improved with the proper positioning.

Ergonomics includes more than just office chairs. There is a whole industry devoted to proper office ergonomics. After working in the ergonomic industry for a number of years, I started to realize that I am often asked, "What kinds of products are ergonomic?"

In the office environment you can buy ergonomic stools for doctors or factory workers, posture knee chairs for those who work on computers, swopper models to help increase the muscles that promote good posture, and pretty much every chair design comes in an ergonomic model.

But how do I know which are the ergonomic ones and which aren't? This part is easy. Because a lot of research and design go into the development of each ergonomic chair and often they have more parts they tend to cost a little more. Many are turned off by this but it is like buying a cheap mattress. Yes a 0 mattress can be slept on as easy as a 00 one but your back pays the extra 0 in pain if you buy the cheap mattress.

Ergonomics is such a growing market that most ergonomic chairs are just a fraction more than there non-ergo counterparts. The main way to know if a product is ergonomic is if it says so. Companies who have energy saver technology advertise it. Ergonomic products will say loud and proud that they are ergonomic. If a product doesn't openly advertise that it is ergonomic than either it was not designed to be sensitive to ergonomics or it is a cheap knockoff.

There are also many other ergonomic products designed to limit improper movement. By now most of you have seen those awkward looking keyboards and wondered why thy split the keys into two sections. The reason behind this change is ergonomics. By changing the angle that the keys are placed it allows your arms and wrists to use a more natural angle. The next time you type on a traditional keyboard notice how you have to bend your wrists outward to achieve a good angle.

Besides all of the health and wealth benefits of the new ergonomic products they tend to be a lot of fun. Often times they change the way you traditionally do a task. Learning a new way can be challenging but a fun process. Co-workers may laugh at your struggle but trust me after a few days of your new chair or keyboard. One by one they will come up and ask you where you purchased it and then in no time the entire office is ergonomic.

Most ergonomic chairs look different in some manner and this is also an eye catcher. So with all you new found coolness and comfort go out and enjoy a good walk after work because now you'll actually have the energy.

Office Chairs, Seatbacks, Ergonomics and Lumbar Support and Why They All Work

!±8± Office Chairs, Seatbacks, Ergonomics and Lumbar Support and Why They All Work

Office Chairs don't really require a seatback in order to work properly. The spine is able to maintain it's natural curvature even without the lower back support provided by the average task chair seatback. However, the natural tendency for most people when seated for long periods of time in front of the computer is to slouch forward towards what they are concentrating on.

This slouching posture pushes out the lower back, making the natural inward curve point in the wrong direction. With the spine pushing outward towards the chair, the lower back structure is strained, creating unneeded tension. It was obvious there was a need to remind all of us to sit properly and the lower back supports for seatbacks on office chairs were born.

Some manufacturer's still make amazingly ergonomic chair models without any seatback, such as the Swopper stool, which helps train the person to sit corretly and position their body correctly instead of expecting the chair to do all the work. No matter how ergonomic the chair is, as with any health product, it still needs to be used properly in order to work right. An ergonomic chair is no help at all when used improperly, it is the seating position that really matters and how you use the mechanisms that matter to your body health.

When placed correctly, a good lumbar back support should keep your ears, shoulders and hips aligned which in turn maintains the natural inward curvature of the lower spine. Overall the lumbar back support should keep the spine in a very natural position, not overly accentuating the inward curve and not leaving it totally unsupported either.

Most portable lumbar support pillows that are built to use with office chairs are shaped with one end different from the other and should also be positioned correctly where needed to keep the spine posture right. If your ergonomic office chair has a built in support piece, it is important to test to see if the chair fits well for your body type. Not all chairs and supports were built for one size fits all and everyone's back is just a bit different when it comes to placement and curvature from the neck down.

Some ergonomic office chair models come with an adjustable lumbar support which can be key for some people when it comes to getting the proper fit. The seatback should be positioned so that the curve of the lower spine is supported by the curve in the back of the chair. Some offices require the same office chair to be used with a variety of employees and this level of lumbar back support adjustability can help everyone to sit comfortably.

When seated for long hours in front of the computer, it does not help to ignore office chair ergonomics and posture if one tends to keep sitting in the same chair and keep working. Comfort ability can contribute greatly to one's overall performance and productivity. When sitting well, body health will greatly improve and one is bound to notice less back pain and tension and thank office chairs for the birth of the lumbar support.

Swopper presents a unique alternative to traditional seating by providing a new approach to correct sitting postures, and makes sitting a fun and healthy activity. Back to top DESIGN Numerous chair companies have designed their chairs around the concept of total and complete static support, thinking that the more support the user has (and thus less motion), the better the seating device. Unfortunately, this only serves to perpetuate the problem, leading the user down the road to face more of the problems that a sedentary lifestyle has to offer. Back Pain: No Longer Just For Adults

!±8± Back Pain: No Longer Just For Adults

Adults are not the only ones who suffer from back pain. In fact 60% of children experience back pain before they reach age 18. Many of these back pain episodes are due to backpacks that are overloaded or poorly designed and from poor posture while working at a computer.

More than 6,000 children are treated in hospital emergency rooms each year for injuries related to lugging heavy backpacks -- and most are under 14 years of age. In addition, backpack-related injuries are up 256 percent since 1996.

Chronic pain can have long term affects on children, on their relationships, developmental abilities and school attendance. Therefore, parents and kids alike are taking action on how to relieve back pain and prevent it in the future.

For example, many parents are investing in ergonomically designed backpacks for their children, such as the Obus Form or the AirPacks backpacks available at Relax The Back. These ergonomically designed backpacks take a proactive approach to back health by redistributing the load which reduces back and shoulder tension caused by heavy loads by as much as 80%

Another major cause of kids' back pain is due to the extended period of time they sit at a computer screen. Millions of children are using computers every day, at school and at home, for education and recreation, and often for 2-3 hours at a time daily. Poor posture, on top of a poorly designed workstation, are causing kid's to experience back pain similar to that which makes their parents file workers' comp claims.

"One means with which parents can help prevent back pain in their kids before it starts is by insuring that their home office is ergonomically efficient for themselves and their children," said Marcy Swerdlow, Owner of Relax The Back in Chicago, IL. "Ergonomic task chairs with height and arm adjustment features, allow parents and kids to customize their seating according to their needs and reduce shoulder, neck and back pressure."

Others are turning to fun and innovative back care seating products, such as the Swopper. This ergonomic bouncy stool-like chair eliminates static seating and gives you a fluid, energized movement for a healthy back. The patented mechanism was engineered and crafted in Germany to improve your posture, strengthen the muscles in your lower back and improve circulation to your lower extremities.

In addition, affordable lumbar supports and seat cushions that conform to the curves and angles of your body, can be an easy fix for poorly designed workstation furniture to reduce pressure and relieve back pain.

A few tips for proper posture and sitting:

-Sit back in your chair and use a good back support, do not lean forward; it increases pressure on the spine. Keep your feet flat on the floor or use a footrest.

-Keep your wrists as flat as possible with your elbows at a 90 degree or greater angle. Make sure that the upper arm and elbow are as close to the body and as relaxed as possible for mouse use - avoid overreaching

- Make sure the head is over the shoulders and the neck is as straight as possible

-Change positions frequently to avoid fatigue. Simply walking around the room every 30 to 60 minutes rests both eyes and body.

-As a general rule, children should not carry more than 15 to 20 percent of their body weight in their backpacks, according to Backpack Safety America (BSA).

My Back Hurts, Ouch Ouch!

!±8± My Back Hurts, Ouch Ouch!

"Ouch. My back hurts. Or is my shoulder. Well, it's sort of both, but in my neck. ... Ow

I'll be right back. Should I take an aspirin.

I hope this helps aspirin. It 'was yesterday, but I do not want to have to live aspirin. My appointment is Monday morning ... I'm at least five hours of computer work tonight. Ooooh. My back hurts. Do you think this chair is? "

Does this sound too familiar? If you leave the office every daywith a crick in the neck, pinch back, numb fingers, or all three? The hours (and hours), many of us spend at the computer, every aspect of our body and well-being. Eyes, muscles, nerves, joints, alignment and function of the brain are taxed at the maximum, as we have sedentary day lift chairs glued poorly equipped to protect us from greater harm. And what harm, sometimes irreparable, is on the way, if you do not notice the signs.

ThatSpazzed-out back / shoulder / neck is the result of a spinal column is not supported is not in alignment, when exposed to hours of sitting in a chair poorly designed and built. If stress is added to the lack of consistency and long-term recovery is to add, we are looking for a recipe for disaster: pinched nerves, discs, muscle spasms, and carpal tunnel syndrome are just the beginning.

It is currently in the field of ergonomics for us, with some brilliant contributionsprevention. However, it should be noted that the science of Ergonomics is not new. One could argue that a common pot holder is an ergonomic design, as it allows the human to perform the task of removing a pie from the oven without dropping it, or burning the hands. A hammer with a weighted head and a comfortable, padded handle takes stress off the wrist. Also, ergonomic. Going back to the cave days, the rock that was carefully hollowed to allow the spine to curve into it was ergonomically conscious, as well.

My sister suffered agony from a recurring pinched nerve and stiff neck.

Spending endless workaholic hours at the computer taught her what her body would not, could not, tolerate.

Wake up call.

She did some research and learned that this is a very common syndrome of our times, affecting millions of people. After some investigation, she opted for relief and a return to the living: It's called "The Aeron Chair", from Herman Miller. This amazing chair is the miraculous marriage of ergonomic science and beautiful design. It looks like the coziest sports shoe ever, and sitting in it feels like body-suspension. It has a special back support and engineered angles to align the body for blissful comfort and correct posture during marathon work hours. Once I sat in it I couldn't believe I was making do with my old desk chair.

A colleague of mine has taken a leave of absence to undergo two surgeries to correct pinched nerves. I'm not sure what caused hers, but her departure was, for me, Wake up Call Number Two.

My new ergonomic desk chair will arrive in ten days, along with a "Swopper", an ergonomic stool which allows the user to access continuous motion while working at a table or drawing board. Perfect.

They say prevention is worth a pound of cure.

No more agony, no more exclamations of pain, no more "My back hurts". Don't suffer needlessly. Don't subject your body to potential permanent damage when all that's required is that you get out of your chair every 50 minutes, walk around the office, do some inconspicuous stretching exercises, and invest in a decent ergonomically designed chair.

Brand : Isokinetics | Rate : | Price :

Isokinetics Ball Chairs are the same chairs sold by others, only at a manufacturer direct price. No middleman means no need to pay more! And, we provide all of our chairs with a 1 year guarantee. As an additional bonus, we provide an exclusive exercise ball measuring tape that takes the guesswork out of inflating your ball. Sitting on an exercise ball while at home or work promotes flexibility, coordination, motor skills, core strengthening, and balance. Your body, when positioned on top of an exercise ball, is constantly making small adjustments, often imperceptible, to remain balanced and thus is constantly exercising a large group of muscles in doing so. By strengthening your body's core muscle group you help improve your posture, have better balance and guard against back injuries. It may take time before your body becomes accustom to sitting on an exercise ball, since your core muscles may not have gotten much exercise previously. Start by using it 10 to 15 minutes a day and gradually work your way up. If you have had back problems or injuries, make sure to consult your physician or therapist first. Note: We provide a small, starter pump for free for you to have a way to inflate your ball. However, exercise balls require a lot of air and it will take a lot of pumping with the free pump. So, you may want to consider purchasing at this time a high volume air pump, especially if you use exercise balls a lot or have other things you often inflate, like pool toys or air mattresses.

  • Factory direct price: same manufacturer, same quality, same patented design as sold by others
  • Includes a 52cm ball, available in your choice of colors, and a small starter pump
  • Bonus - Comes with an exclusive "no-guess" exercise ball tape measure for proper inflation
  • Rolling base with 4 wheels, 2 of which are lockable
